THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS

After winning the Encore Producers Award at HOLLYWOOD FRINGE in Los Angeles this past summer, and selling out its run at LONDON’S CAMDEN FRINGE to great reviews, Hal Cantor’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS brings the angst to where it truly belongs: New York City.  Featuring the voice of RICKI LAKE, Hal’s raw, honest, if often painfully hilarious look at himself, is a coming-of-middle-age comedy about coming out late (some might say ‘very late’), among other anxiety-producing triggers and tribulations. Directed by award-winning London theater artist, Ralph Bogard, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS — by its very form — demonstrates theater’s unique ability to reflect life back to us, with humor and heart. And lots of gay sex. More ANXIOUS details, including trailers, can be found at: http://www.AnxiousPlay.com ****REVIEWS: LA and London are crazy about ANXIOUS!**** "There are lots of laughs in Hal Cantor’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS…It’s genuinely down to earth. And, a hell of a tell-all. Cantor practically inverts inside-to-out in a glorious, self-effacing expose of himself...The show is as complex as Cantor is as a person...And this is what makes this production singularly unique." —Tracey Paleo, GIA ON THE MOVE (LA) "What we have here is a one man show that is open and heartfelt, biographical and vulnerable...Cantor has clearly thought about his subject matter in a deep and perceptive way, and is a funny guy.” —Karl O' Doherty, THE REVIEWS HUB: LONDON “…polished, technically seamless and upbeat in energy…Ralph Bogard’s direction keeps Cantor moving…Cantor’s candor and considered approach to the subject do make for an often entertaining and insightful hour.” — James Humphrey, THE UP COMING (London) Please note that all New York City Fringe shows begin at the time stated on your reservation and that we cannot guarantee late seating. No f*cks given. None taken. All done.

“No fucks given. None taken. All done.” (1) A life mantra. (2) A way of cutting through the BS of toxic positivity and social norms too many of us hide behind. (3) A show with this title as part of the 2024 New York City Fringe. In this one-hour class, they will reckon with their complicity in humanity's current demise. Examples of learning outcomes include: how math can prove anything, preservatives are better than Botox, and being right over happy is so choice. CONTENT WARNING: math, bad words (lots and lots), and challenges to status quo What audience members from Hollywood Fringe had to say (June 2023): - “Bombastic, aggressive, enlightening and had me questioning what the f*** I’ve been doing with my life” - “Darkly funny, deeply truthful, and definitely challenging… Class is in session; come learn.” - “A comedic take on life lessons to shake up the soul! A MUST WATCH.” What audience members from San Francisco Fringe had to say (August 2023): - “the cathartic, acerbic Ted Talk so many of us need but precious few of us ever get” - “one of those performances that’ll keep you thinking and feeling way after you’ve left the theater” - “a funny, sassy, poignant one-woman harangue” Please note that all New York City Fringe shows begin at the time stated on your reservation and that we cannot guarantee late seating. Sonnets from a Sin-Eater

Sin-eating is a ritual older than Jesus. It’s been practiced across the globe, but the iteration I will be practicing comes from 17th century Wales. In essence, you eat a meal off the chest of a dead person, and, in doing so, you absorb their sins. The deceased can thus transition peacefully, free from the weight of their mortal wrongdoings. Calgary has not yet died, so instead of eating off her corpse, I’ll be meditating on her spirit—and internalizing her sins—as I eat this Taco Bell. *** K is a recent grad looking for fast cash and moral purity. Calgary is a dykebaiting pop star who can’t stop getting canceled. TikTok is a social media app for short-form video content. Brokeneck Girls: The Murder Ballad Musical

Brokeneck Girls: The Murder Ballad Musical is a dark comedy based on the tradition of violence against women in folk music and the true crimes that inspired it. The social commentary delivers fast-paced laughter while addressing issues of class, race, gender, and power. Revenge, redemption, free will and the conflict between good and evil unfold unexpectedly in a story focused on three women who bond over music and share increasingly outrageous secrets. Eventually the truth comes out- the desire to survive has driven all of them to become what they fear most. The score, performed by the NYC-based, folk noir band Brokeneck Girls, features songs of murder, mayhem and dirty deeds spiced with juicy gossip and facts about real people and events in the songs. But when it gets canceled after just a few weeks, she’s forced to pack up her red platform boots and move back in to her mom’s house in suburbia. Lolo’s Psychic Therapist told her she’d be famous and happily married by now. Instead, she’s stuck in her childhood bedroom, taking a wild and traumatic trip through boyfriend’s past. From The Yogi to The Phantom Texter to The S&M Enthusiast, Lolo’s penchant for attracting the bizarre really cuts her up. As she grapples with her ghosts and considers abandoning everything for a British Beau, Lolo has a radical realization. Maybe…just maybe…she has a different path to happiness in this world. Written/performed by Lauren O'Brien and directed/developed with Christine Bokhour. Paper Kraine

We're back for a eighth season of new works in development! Paper Kraine was created in 2016 to bring together works in their earliest stages, audiences, and nonprofits. Monthly, the PK team curates a new works sampler platter around a theme related to a nonprofit. Try something new, delicious and strange. Come for the art. Stay for the community. Paper Kraine was created on the principle that we all know writers, directors, actors, and creators who make wonderful work. All they need is a space. The Paper Kraine is committed to creating a venue for early-career artists to show humor-focused work in the spirit of adventurous discovery. We encourage risk-taking, question-asking, and the development of a supportive community of artists seeing, encouraging, and challenging each other’s work with the ultimate goal of enriching the artistic community through cross-pollination and meeting new people. The Episodic Theatre Project

Trouble doth ensue at the Baltimore Area Renaissance Faire when the Monarch and Creative Director impulsively announces the fair is closing and she’s dumping all three of her polyamorous partners. Shocked and heartbroken, her fellow employees and lovers—a depressed jester, toxically chivalrous knight, and metaphysically troubled tarot reader—traverse the five stages of grief as they mourn their utopian summer and relationships, and prepare to re-enter the real world. Please note: You will be witnessing a work-in-progress! Designed to kick start the creative process, The Episodic Theatre Project inspires collaboration and risk-taking through an intensive professional experience that strengthens artistic bonds and community. The five-part play, designed to be viewed in succession, is the culmination of a 5-week intensive process celebrating underrepresented identities. Actors have less than a week to rehearse the material before going in front of a live audience. As such, you may see our actors on script throughout the performance, as we have chosen to focus on making discoveries in the writing through play in the rehearsal room. Thank you for your support of new work!

We Been Here: Black Burlesque Legacy

The We Been Here showcase pays tribute to Black burlesque legends by presenting their histories through TedX-style presentations, and features acts from New York's vibrant Black burlesque scene. Hot-cha girls. Strip tease darlings. Exotic dancers. Shake dancers. Hoochie coochie girls. Black women have always been a part of the building and rebuilding of burlesque in America, but are often left out of the history books. Our unique way of storytelling through movement, costuming, props, and performance is an integral part of the legacy of classic burlesque in the 40s and 50s and the revival of the art form through neo-burlesque in the 90s. We Been Here stars Queerly Femmetastic, Nita B. Yellowcakes, & Miss AuroraBoobRealis, is hosted by Gigi Holliday, with stage management from Susie Dhal, support from Dominant Jeane, and mentorship by a living legend, Perle Noire.

The show format: Through a series of lessons taught by a professional curmudgeon with high expectations, students will be challenged on their unspoken assumptions about condoning and perpetuating harmful social norms.

Loyalty, murder, quick wit, and banjo jokes tell the hilarious and unflinching story of hidden history and the beginning of cultural obsession with true crime. Join us for the thrilling new version, compressed and edited specifically for NYC Fringe Festival! A Little Less Than Kind

A LITTLE LESS THAN KIND, written by Gracie Rittenberg and directed by Slaney Rose Jordan, is a new, female-centric adaptation of Shakespeare’s HAMLET. The production’s Hamlet analogue “Hannah”, is the caustic, bisexual heir apparent to Advantage Tech, a monolithic Silicon Valley company. ALLTK explores the complex emotions and antagonism that arise in mother/daughter relationships.

Doors open at 7:30 for drinks and mingling, curtain at 8:00pm. Welcome to Mildred Springs! A quaint city in the vague Northeastern United States. A city not unlike other cities. Join us while the bold and the beautiful citizens of Mildred Springs live the days of their lives. Some might be young and restless. Some might be doctors working at Sacred Corpuscle Memorial, a general hospital. But they've all got one life to live. Join us as their world turns. Join us as their guiding light leads them on their constant search for tomorrow. Join us as they hang on to the edge of night and you will be transported to another world. The world of It's Getting Tired Mildred. But make sure you join us for their continuing stories. Set in the 1980’s, known for riding the line between camp and loving homage to the soap opera genre, and featuring a dynamic cast of the indie theatre pros, IT’S GETTING TIRED MILDRED hooks audience members to come back month after month to see what happens next. Each episode of IT’S GETTING TIRED MILDRED is performed only once! Formerly a late-night hit... Now daytime moves from late-night to primetime! Now at Under St. Marks, 94 St. Marks Place.

As You Will

Friends, foes, fools! Do you ever bemoan the fact that the 884,647 words William Shakespeare wrote have been performed already? Do you yearn for the experience of seeing The Bard's works for the first time? Then celebrate the glad tidings of As You Will and our Unscripted Shakespeare Show! These Shakespearean Scholars are here to present all the monumental works the immortal Bard would've written if he hadn't gone and died. With just the title given by the audience the players of As You Will bring a Shakespearean comedy to life complete with Shakspeare's themes, language, poetic verse, and some scholarly footnotes thrown in for good measure. As You Will have performed such classics as "Eight Merry Spiders," "That Doth Not Go There," "1601: A Space Odyssey'' and though those shows will never be seen again, there’s always a Shakespearean world premiere in our makeshift Globe Theatre.
