Family Legend

Every Storyteller got their start somewhere and usually that start is with the family legends that taught them how transporting it could be to listen to a life. Now Nefarious Laboratories presents an evening of those family legends, the stories that made the storytellers, from some of New York’s best raconteurs. Come and have a seat, just like at the kitchen table, while they tell you about the scandals and the incidents and the feats of daring by relations near and distant tat influences them to turn their own lives into great stories.



Cyndi Freeman is a two-time NY Fringe Festival award winning solo performer. She has been performing as a storyteller for 20 years, credits include: The Moth, The Liar Show, Adam Wade’s Super Stories, Seth Lind’s Told, Risk, Stripped Stories & And I Am Not Lying. Her solo shows have been presented in Boston, Amsterdam, Ireland, The UK, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Festival, and The Edmonton Fringe Festival and in NYC. Ms. Freeman is a recipient of a 2015 SPARC grant (Seniors Partnering With Artists City Wide), which enabled her to partner with the Brooklyn Arts Council, in leading a program that teaches storytelling to seniors. She also teaches storytelling with The Moth Community Outreach Program & Story Studio. She is the co producer of two shows Nefarious Laboratory Variety Show that is presented quarterly at Under St Marks & Horsy Totsy Burlesque, which is presented monthly at the Slipper Room. A winner of a Grand Prize Playwriting Fellowship Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, her other credits include: The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, Campus Comedy on HBO, and Compromising Situations on Showtime. 



Brad Lawrence is a performer, writer, and host. He was the first storyteller to win back-to back Moth GrandSLAMS and is regularly feature on the Moth MainSTAGE. His writing was most recently featured in McSweeney's. He is both a member and featured storyteller with the BTK Band and a regular at such shows as The Liar Show, Adam Wade’s Super Stories, Seth Lind’s Told, The Soundtrack Series, The Risk Podcast and How I Learned. In addition, his solo show, “Monsters In The Wood,” was presented in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival to critical acclaim. He performs burlesque as Handsome Brad and works in burlesque productions throughout NYC including Epic Win Burlesque, Hotsy Totsy Burlesque and Kitty Nights Burlesque. He has co-produced and performed in storytelling and variety shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and South By Southwest Interactive.

Susan Kent is a writer, storyteller, and host/curator of Tell It: Brooklyn. She’s been featured on The Moth Radio Hour and podcast, the Risk! podcast, and she’s performed at shows like Barbershop Stories, Yum’s the Word, and What Are You Afraid Of? She’s got a blog called and she Tweets sometimes @TheSusanKent. Right now, she should be working on her solo show, Into the Belly of the Beast, which she’s going to perform at The Tank’s SOLOweek in December. 


Peter Aguero was born and raised in the wilds of South Jersey. He is a regular host of The Moth. His solo storytelling show, Daddy Issues, has been performed around the US and Canada. For outdated information, go to


Mel Dockery comes from a long line of storytellers. Her grandmother created fascinating stories for children and reportedly could break up many a sibling fight with the words “That reminds me of a story…”. Mel is happy to be passing on the tradition to future generations. She broke into the public arena of story-telling three years ago and since then has participated in Moth Slams and Grand Slams and appeared on Andy Christie’s “The Liar Show”, The Magnet Theater’s ‘Armando Diaz Experience’, ‘The Adam Wade from New Hampshire Show’ and many other venues in and around New York. This year, along with Cyndi Freeman and Dawn Fraser, she brought a storytelling workshop to a senior center in Brooklyn and hopes to continue increasing the power of senior citizens through the art of storytelling.
