Paper Kraine

We're back for a sixth season of new works in development! The Paper Kraine was created in 2016 to bring together works in their earliest stages, audiences, and nonprofits. Monthly, the PK team curates a new works sampler platter around a theme related to a nonprofit - all PK ticket proceeds and a passed hat go to support the work of organizations like the Ali Forney Center, UNWRA, Mentors Against Violence Prevention, and the ACLU. This season is dedicated with unending gratitude towards the team of FRIGID NY. We all know artists making great work: all they need is a space, and FRIGID's dedication to making that accessible for artists is a vital part of the New York arts ecosystem.  Try something new, delicious and strange. Come for the art. Stay for the community. Paper Kraine was created on the principle that we all know writers, directors, actors, and creators who make wonderful work. All they need is a space. The Paper Kraine is committed to creating a venue for early-career artists to show humor-focused work in the spirit of adventurous discovery. We encourage risk-taking, question-asking, and the development of a supportive community of artists seeing, encouraging, and challenging each other’s work with the ultimate goal of enriching the artistic community through cross-pollination and meeting new people.

What began as a way to work with her friends has exploded on the comedy scene. When Carole (a veteran of the stand up scene for over 40 years) started, you would never see two female comics on the same show. Fast forward to today’s comedy scene and nothing has changed, even though there are way more women in comedy. Carole decided to do something about it. JOSIAH

JOSIAH is a Canadian play based on the life of Josiah Henson. It is the powerful and inspiring story of a man who spent forty years in slavery before escaping to Canada with his entire family in the days before the Underground Railroad. His life story made him world famous as the "real" Uncle Tom. This one-person show engages audiences with a mix of drama, dance and movement. It reveals the first chapter of Josiah Henson's life from slavery to freedom before escaping to Canada and helping to found the Dawn Settlement which became a terminus of the Underground Railroad. The story is told through realistic yet poetic dialogue. This show harkens back to the bare bones of storytelling through theatre. A single actor inhabits a 12' X 12' square of light using a cap, a handkerchief, a bucket, and loads of imagination to share an incredible story. Josiah Henson defied adversity. Morally brave and resilient, he is a role model. We believe in the need for stories that demonstrate the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity particularly in these racially charged times. We believe that by being true to one's convictions and that by daring to dream, one can make a difference in this world. Based on the autobiography of Josiah Henson, the words are, for the most part, his. The message is his. The messenger is a two act, two hour, one-person, thoroughly engaging dramatization with tap dancing, rap, gospel songs and a whole lot of joy and pain celebrating the journey from slavery to freedom and on to triumph. We are grateful to be able to offer Josiah at the Queerly Festival on June 19th , in honour of Juneteenth.

After helping beat Donald Trump (ever heard of him?) in court one more time, award-winning comedian Sid Singh (BBC, NBC, Comic Relief, Comedy Central UK) is back with his brand new show "Illegally Funny!" The show is all about geniuses, idiots, and conspiracies in a world gone mad! Come watch a hilarious comedian make you laugh and maybe, just maybe, learn how to hack into the US Supreme Court! **** -The Scotsman: "This is a game-changer of a show, or at least it should be, because playing the game Sid's way, you get the feeling that your chances of winning are exponentially increased." **** -RadioHaha: "His coolness on stage is remnant of that of Dave Chappelle, whilst his level-headed demeanour is likened to late-night talk show hosts like Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert. How is this guy not bigger than he currently is?" Sid Singh is an accomplished stand up comedian and writer whose work has appeared on BBC's Muzlamic and Comic Relief, Comedy Central UK's Modern Horror Stories, BBC3's Comedy Shorts, and more! Most recently he was a cast member at the famed Boom Chicago theatre in Amsterdam where he wrote and starred in their show The Future Is Here. Mike Daisey: FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED

FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED Created and Performed by Mike DaiseyIn a searing evening Mike Daisey is the first theater artist in America to address the war in the Ukraine, starting from the indelible image of a Ukranian woman telling a Russian soldier to fill his pockets with sunflower seeds, so when he dies plants will bloom on his corpse. A night of stories of dark winds through the forests, terrifying Eastern European babcias, the return of the Cold War, and the price we pay for the monsters we fail to stake through the heart.Mike Daisey, who has been called “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by The New York Times, is the preeminent monologist in the American theater today.Praise for Mike Daisey at the Kraine:"He is outstanding. These were startling and stirring words, the kind that hogtie your attention. They are worth having Daisey, and live theater, back for."The New York Times"I felt home again—listening to a talented storyteller spin a version of a year not entirely unlike the one I had just spent, felt really, really good."The Washington Post"Amid all the laughs, there’s a lucid lesson—Mike Daisey singlehandedly redefines the concept of mansplaining.

S.P.O.T Mentorship is hosting their first inaugural one-act play festival entitled "What Makes Me Tick." The S.P.O.T. team chose seven plays to be showcased for the first festival. The mission of this unique project is to cultivate a space for emerging directors to connect with early-career playwrights and actors, collectively harnessing an environment of artistic craftsmanship. This is all in a means to begin the process of career development. In a semi-post pandemic era, us artists are looking for ways to emerge back into the scene. Funny Never Gets Old

Her first Showtime special made history as the only comedy special to feature 6 female comics over the age of 50. In fact it was the network's highest rated comedy special of 2019. Two more have followed with more in the works for 2022!

Sid Singh: Illegally Funny

Sid has since toured the show around America and Europe headlining theatre shows in New York, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Prague, Barcelona and more as a result! In addition, his debut comedy album Amazing! Probably reached number 3 on the iTunes comedy chart and can still be streamed on all major platforms today!

He strips the practice of its condescension and defensiveness and turns it into a conscientious and humble discipline of self-examination as a man."DC Metro Arts
