Preparing "The Art of Becoming" for the Adelaide Fringe Festival

Penny Arcade returns to the experimental memoir, rock-and-roll performance theater she pioneered in the 1980's with the quotable one-liners and the cultural critique we have come to expect from her. This episode travels from her immigrant Italian family to the NY legends of the Underground, a walk on the wild side to Max’s Kansas City, with Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, the Stonewall Uprising; to her early 70’s sojourn in Amsterdam, then the Balearic Islands of Formentera, Ibiza and Mallorca that ranged from full moon parties to Deia with the poet Robert Graves to drinking with sailors in Palma De Mallorca’s Red Light District. It's about when fame is not enough. It's about the completion of character, our ancestors and how the past comes back to meet us. Penny Arcade debuted in 1968 at 18 with New York’s explosive Play-House of the Ridiculous, the seminal, rock and roll, queer, glitter/glam, political performance theater that influenced everything from Hair to Punk. A Warhol Superstar at 19 featured in the 1972 Warhol/Morrissey comedy, "Women in Revolt". Penny is the author of over 16 full length plays and hundreds of solo performance pieces. She is an independent artist who's active career spans over 50 years, contributing to new art forms for every decade since the 1960’s. A highly influential performance and experimental theatre artist , her magnetic stage presence has brought her international renown, her compassionate yet unflinching honesty has influenced generations of artists everywhere, making her an icon of artistic resistance.

Both an homage and send-up to the Upper East Side lady & the gayz that inhabit her, this interpretatión of the life of Timon of Athens casts a middle-aged diva as hostess of Park Avenue’s biggest flop parade (yes gawd). I AM MY OWN MILF (TIMON BY TIMON OF ATHENS FOR TIMON BY TIMON IN COLLABORATION WITH TIMON FOR TIMON BY TIMON OF ATHENS) is a postmodern drag+dance collage that imagines a world where the rich have to pay their debts.

The Parentheses

Sometimes we're looking for an explanation, tacking on afterthought, enriching what is already complete with a pair of rounded brackets. The Parentheses is a a window into the lives of two characters, Natasha and Talia, as they reconnect over the course of a single evening. It is a 60 minute piece that explores relationships, timing, and closure. Already wholly complete and complex on their own, they look to explain, to explore, and to experience one evening together in an attempt to understand what they really mean to themselves and to each other. All the things that could have been, and all the things that could maybe be, the timing that shapes our stories, all can be found in the parentheses.

TEST

TEST is a play that won the highest award for dramaturgy (Askeer) in Bulgaria. The play TEST, by the prominent Bulgarian playwright and poet Elin Rahnev, is a brilliant satirical metaphor about the struggle of keeping one's identity while being forced to fit into society’s parameters in order to survive in this world. What and who is damaged when trying to follow society’s norms? In today’s dynamic and unpredictably changing world, we often face pressuring challenges on so many levels. How do you deal with them? Have you ever felt pressured to conform, comply, and/or lose your identity? Do you easily adapt to whatever comes? Without giving too much away, The Company is the ubiquitous power in the society/world of this play, where Anton attends his first job interview to join the infamous corporate giant. His expectations completely fall short of what The Company is and his worldview is turned upside down. And so, we leave you with these last few questions: Does Anton have the willpower to escape? Does he want to escape at all, or is The Company’s grasp on him too strong? This play will surprise you with its satirical sense of humor and it will keep you on the edge of your seat with tears and laughter. Presented by two very talented professional actors, it is fun to watch, and also philosophical enough to challenge your views about life. Come and see how it all unfolds.

But when war breaks out as they are crossing the Atlantic, return home becomes impossible. While desperate for Allied victory, Eleanor’s family must endure Allied bombings, hunger, gestapo threats, and finally, the horrors of Russian occupation. Mike Daisey: FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED

FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED Created and Performed by Mike DaiseyIn a searing evening Mike Daisey is the first theater artist in America to address the war in the Ukraine, starting from the indelible image of a Ukranian woman telling a Russian soldier to fill his pockets with sunflower seeds, so when he dies plants will bloom on his corpse. A night of stories of dark winds through the forests, terrifying Eastern European babcias, the return of the Cold War, and the price we pay for the monsters we fail to stake through the heart.Mike Daisey, who has been called “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by The New York Times, is the preeminent monologist in the American theater today.Praise for Mike Daisey at the Kraine:"He is outstanding. These were startling and stirring words, the kind that hogtie your attention. They are worth having Daisey, and live theater, back for."The New York Times"I felt home again—listening to a talented storyteller spin a version of a year not entirely unlike the one I had just spent, felt really, really good."The Washington Post"Amid all the laughs, there’s a lucid lesson—Mike Daisey singlehandedly redefines the concept of mansplaining. He strips the practice of its condescension and defensiveness and turns it into a conscientious and humble discipline of self-examination as a man."DC Metro Arts
