BECOMING AUSTIN NATION - From Crack to PhD: One Drag Queen's Story

Austin Nation shares his entertaining and humorous autobiography of his own life story, “From Crack to PhD: A Drag Queen’s Story.” A life that changed dramatically once he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1986. At the mere age of 26, it was the beginning of the end. In 1987, a medication called AZT came out and he had to take it every 4 hours around the clock. It was toxic! In 1994, within a 6-month period, Austin lost all of my closest friends. He thought, if he was going to die, then he was going party his way out! Drugs and alcohol became his best friend. Playing around in drag was part of his experience while getting high. Fast forward, he turned 40 years old and was still alive. What the hell! What was God up to? He was sad to have outlived all of his dearest friends, not being able to grow old with them. So he thought that there must be something else for him to do. Austin beat my demons and today, he has 19 years clean and sober. He was able to obtain a PhD from UCSF, one of the best universities in the country. After being on disability for 20 years, He started thinking I might be well enough to go back work. Today he’s an assistant professor at California State University, Fullerton in the School of Nursing and Nursing Supervisor at USC Keck Medical Center. Someone suggested the name A’Freeka Nature, sort of a play of Africa Nature as a drag name. Austin has auditioned for RuPaul’s Drag Race twice, entered a couple of drag search competitions – placing in the top 5, and won the title of Mx Caring Heart 2020 with Orange County Shanti. A woman ahead of her time; Anna May Wong was Hollywood’s first Chinese American movie star. For all her talent, wit, and charm, she’s spent her life searching for a place to belong. Come for the art. Stay for the community. Paper Kraine was created on the principle that we all know writers, directors, actors, and creators who make wonderful work. All they need is a space. The Paper Kraine is committed to creating a venue for early-career artists to show humor-focused work in the spirit of adventurous discovery. Mike Daisey: FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED

FROM THIS MOMENT YOU ARE CURSED Created and Performed by Mike DaiseyIn a searing evening Mike Daisey is the first theater artist in America to address the war in the Ukraine, starting from the indelible image of a Ukranian woman telling a Russian soldier to fill his pockets with sunflower seeds, so when he dies plants will bloom on his corpse. A night of stories of dark winds through the forests, terrifying Eastern European babcias, the return of the Cold War, and the price we pay for the monsters we fail to stake through the heart.Mike Daisey, who has been called “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by The New York Times, is the preeminent monologist in the American theater today.Praise for Mike Daisey at the Kraine:"He is outstanding. These were startling and stirring words, the kind that hogtie your attention. They are worth having Daisey, and live theater, back for."The New York Times"I felt home again—listening to a talented storyteller spin a version of a year not entirely unlike the one I had just spent, felt really, really good."The Washington Post"Amid all the laughs, there’s a lucid lesson—Mike Daisey singlehandedly redefines the concept of mansplaining. He strips the practice of its condescension and defensiveness and turns it into a conscientious and humble discipline of self-examination as a man."DC Metro Arts

Anna May Wong: PERSONA

A woman ahead of her time; Anna May Wong was Hollywood’s first Chinese American movie star. For all her talent, wit, and charm, she’s spent her life searching for a place to belong. She was discriminated against by American society for her race, and demeaned by her family for her dreams. It seemed the only place where she was beyond her circumstances was in the magical world of film and acting, if only Hollywood could’ve seen her beyond racist stereotypes and caricatures. From rumored sapphic romances to traveling different countries to lifelong friendships with fellow legendary artists, Anna will defy all the odds as she devotes herself to her craft. Only one question remains: will there ever be a place where she can be seen as human? Note: Masks will be required at this performance Tickets on a sliding scaleStreaming option available

Paper Kraine

We're back for a sixth season of new works in development! The Paper Kraine was created in 2016 to bring together works in their earliest stages, audiences, and nonprofits. Monthly, the PK team curates a new works sampler platter around a theme related to a nonprofit. This month, all PK ticket proceeds and a passed hat go to support the work of the Ali Forney Center, which offers LGBT+ Youth Shelter and Services This season is dedicated with unending gratitude towards the team of FRIGID NY. We all know artists making great work: all they need is a space, and FRIGID's dedication to making that accessible for artists is a vital part of the New York arts ecosystem.  Try something new, delicious and strange. We encourage risk-taking, question-asking, and the development of a supportive community of artists seeing, encouraging, and challenging each other’s work with the ultimate goal of enriching the artistic community through cross-pollination and meeting new people.
